A Brief Look at Transportation's Role in C & D Debris Waste Management

When it comes to the trucking industry, many think of transporting freight or goods. While this is true, transportation companies also transport construction and demolition (C & D) debris. Globally, the C & D waste management market (C & D debris) earned over US$ 210 billion in 2021. Yet, many underestimate the importance of transportation in C & D debris waste management.
C & D debris accounts for nearly one-quarter of the national waste stream. It is a type of waste that includes wood, gypsum, and asphalt. The transport of C & D debris is incidental to construction and demolition work. However, most C & D debris is generated from demolition. Although many construction and demolition companies have gone “green,” there are still materials that cannot be recycled or reused, such as broken glass, old paint cans and some plastics. There is also the issue of contaminated soil. In a construction project, the soil must first be tested. If it is contaminated, an environmental services company is brought in to remove the affected soil and transported to a designated landfill. This type of waste needs to be handled by a trucking company that has the experience to handle hazardous (and non-hazardous) waste and have the correct permits. Trucking companies that offer this type of transport have become more in demand over the past thirty years due to the advent of new plastics and chemicals. Thus, the use of trucking companies for transporting C & D debris will only grow in the coming years.
