The trucking industry is a vital part of America’s economy. According to a recent survey by FleetOwner, an estimated 49 tons of freight, valued at over $53 billion, was moved in 2020. The pandemic had a big effect on truck drivers as their hours and hauls increased, all while trucking companies were dealing with a driver shortage. Moreover, driving schools are making it even harder for trucking companies to hire drivers due to the type of transmission they are teaching their students. There has been a growing shift of trucking companies switching to automatic transmission, in which driving schools are following. This is a disservice to future truck drivers. Teaching manual transmission is still needed as many trucking companies have manual fleets (or a mixture of both transmissions).
The reason for the switch to automatic transmission has to do with how humans drive trucks. We are living in an age where computers are a major part of a vehicle (commercial and non-commercial trucks). They control gear shifting with computer-controlled actuators, which is easier on drivers and trucks. However, manual transmission gives drivers better control of the truck and provides better fuel economy. They also cost less than automatic transmissions.
Yet, driving schools are too eager to follow this trend, which leaves trucking companies with manual fleets in a bind. All driving schools should teach both transmissions, giving the driver the opportunity to increase his/her driving skills (and job opportunities). Also, it would make it easier for drivers when they must change trucks, which saves time and money.

Drivers who learn on manual transmission are more valuable, in that they have a better understanding of the how truck drives and how to handle different road conditions (e.g., inclines).
